Group Exercise Specialty Instructor - Tai Chi

General Function

 

This position is responsible for sharing fitness knowledge by leading participants in high-quality group exercise and providing excellent customer service to members in a safe and clean environment.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Arrives early to all classes and provides clear, and easy to understand instruction for all members.
  • Greets and develops friendly, professional relationships with all members.
  • Document member progress in attaining health and wellness goals.
  • Growing member participation in classes to achieve maximum capacity.
  • Remain alert and attentive to all members.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately when rescue or first aid is necessary.
  • Ensure cleanliness of equipment and facility.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and trainings.
  • Participates in member retention, special events and fundraising.
  • Remains up to date on emergency procedures and family center policies.
  • Stays current with industry trends and group exercise techniques.
  • Promote and represent the mission and core values of the YMCA of Central Florida in the Family Center and its programs.
  • All other duties assigned by Management.

 

Job Requirements

 

To be successful, you must meet education, training and experience requirements, and you must be able to demonstrate some critical knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Education, Training and Experience

 

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must have current nationally recognized certification in pertinent area of specialization.
  • Prior group exercise experience preferred.
  • Previous customer service experience preferred.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications required.

  • Ability to choreograph music with group exercise movements.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent follow through actions regarding communication.
  • Desire and ability to work with people of all ages, improving the health and fitness at all levels.
  • Demonstrated responsibility and dependability.
  • Must exhibit patience, sensitivity and understanding.
  • Ability to motivate, inspire and engage members.
  • Friendly, customer service oriented attitude with members and fellow employees.

 

Working Conditions

 

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends and holidays as needed.
  • May be required to lift and carry up to 30 lbs. in various forms.
  • May be required to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time including continuous physical endurance for thirty to sixty minutes of aerobic activity.  
  • Must be alert at all times, keeping safety in mind. Must possess acceptable hearing and visual capabilities in order to monitor environment and members’ well-being.
  • Must possess auditory, verbal and visual capabilities in order to adequately communicate via phone and in person.
  • Must be capable of working under pressure in a somewhat disruptive environment.

Levels of Group Exercise Instructors

 

GROUP EXERCISE II (Position Level 12)

Differentiated by the following:

*Minimum of 2 years group exercise instruction required.

       

SPECIALTY GROUP EXERCISE INSTRUCTOR (Position Level 12)

Differentiated by the following:

*Additional certification or training that allows the instructor to teach a specialty class such as Tae Kwon Do, Yoga, etc.

SPECIALTY GROUP EXERCISE INSTRUCTOR II (Position Level 14)

Differentiated by the following:

*Minimum of 2 years specialty group exercise instruction required.

MASTER SPECIALTY GROUP EXERCISE INSTRUCTOR (Position Level 15)

Differentiated by the following:

*Mastery of knowledge and teaching ability in a specialty class.

*Ability to train and teach others to learn area of mastery.
