Job Title:  Cost Accountant

Department:  G&A

Reports To:  Controller

FLSA Status:    Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

The Cost Accountant is responsible for the management of actual and standard costing using the QAD ERP system.This accountant will establish and maintain GL/Standard and Current Cost sets, perform periodic cost roll-ups, variance analysis, margin analysis, inventory reconciliations and cycle counts.Attention to detail and accuracy, strong analytical and problem solving skills, self-starter and good communication skills are all key competencies expected.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Describe each of the duties and responsibilities required and specify the general amount of time spent.  (Major = Maj, generally > or = 35% of time spent, Minor = Min, generally < 35% of time spent.)

 

  1. Develop/refine and maintain product(s) costing process(es) within the QAD system including controls for data accumulation and reporting systems.  Major
  2. Review bill of materials and standard and actual costs for inaccuracies and update cost sets periodically, and as needed for new items. Major
  3. Work closely with other departments in developing timely communication of information affecting financial performance measurements.  Minor
  4. Coordinate cycle counts and physical inventory counts (inventory observation at the end of the year), investigate variances and resolve issues. Minor
  5. Establish/review overhead methodology, accumulate and apply overhead costs according to GAAP.  Minor
  6. Review inventory for obsolescence and establish reserve.  Minor
  7. Develop, analyze, and provide timely cost and variance reporting to management.  Minor
  8. Prepare journal entries, assist with monthly closings and provide information for the preparation of financial statements.  Minor
  9. Work closely with Production Planning to address price variances, inventory discrepancies and process improvement.  Minor

10.  Cross train and assist in other accounting/finance related duties.  Minor

11.  Assist with year-end and other audits by providing analytical insight and support of manufacturing variances, purchase price variances, manufacturing resources and cost center spend, and inventory reserves, adjustments and scrap.  Minor

KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS / EDUCATION

  1. Min 3 years progressive experience in cost accounting role and 5 years in accounting and/or finance roles in a manufacturing environment.  R
  2. Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices.  R
  3. Strong working knowledge of ERP accounting software.   R
  4. Strong analytical and MS Office, especially Excel.  R
  5. Bachelors or equivalent degree in accounting or finance.  R
