CLASSIFICATION:    Plans Examiner, Sr.

HOURS:    40 Hours per week

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:    Minimum of five years (seven preferred) of plans examination experience with fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, life safety code or combination thereof – utilizing the FL Fire Prevention Code. Seven years of proven experience in layout and design of fire alarm or sprinkler systems, or NICET Level 4 certification in Fire Alarm Systems or Water Based Fire Protection Systems Layout may be substituted for plans examination experience. Must be certified as a Fire Inspector I in the State of FL. Two year (four year preferred) college degree in fire science or fire engineering. Must obtain the Certified Fire Plans Examiner designation from the National Fire Protection Association within two years of hire. Must possess the ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction plans, specifications and technical drawings and review same for compliance with FL Administrative Code 6IG15. Must have a valid FL Driver License. State of Florida Firefighter Minimum Standards is preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:    Analyzing, evaluating, recommending modifications and approving fire protection plans and systems in new construction and existing structures. Must have extensive knowledge in firefighting methods, building construction, fire exit, alarm and sprinkler regulations, and all related fire code requirements for buildings in the State of FL. Meets with public, engineers, contractors, and developers to review construction plans to ensure structures meet state and federal fire code and ordinance compliance standards. Performs duties required of Fire Safety Inspector or Fire Marshal as necessary.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
