At All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine (ACH JHM) we are building the pediatric health care delivery system of the future under the leadership of Jonathan M. Ellen, president and vice dean. ACH JHM is a 259-bed freestanding children's hospital that is 80% acute care; more than half of all beds are dedicated to intensive care level services. The new hospital opened in 2010 and connects to a new Outpatient Care Center, with 1 million square feet of combined space. Beyond the St. Petersburg campus, ACH JHM operates 10 outpatient care centers in 8 west central/southwest Florida counties and provides neonatology and other select subspecialty services at affiliate community hospitals.

 

The Vice President Human Resources reports to Jonathan M. Ellen, president and vice dean, and is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing human resources programs and services for the Hospital and ensures compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. This position formulates and implements programs in talent acquisition, employment, employee/labor relations, compensation, benefits, human resources information systems, training and development, career development, EEO/Affirmative Action and employee health.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates as part of the Hospital's executive management team, in formulating overall strategies, goals and objectives of the institution and develops policies and plans to promote these goals.
  • Functions as an expert consultant to management on a wide variety of human resources issues.
  • Develops, directs, and implements through subordinate personnel and managers, human resources programs in talent acquisition, employment, employee/labor relations, compensation, benefits, training and development, career development, human resources information systems, EEO/Affirmative Action and employee health.
  • Provides leadership and guidance for diversity and inclusion initiatives at the Hospital to foster a more inclusive culture and environment.
  • Provides guidance and supervision to human resources directors in development of policies and procedures.
  • Approves major changes to internal human resources departmental protocols and processes.
  • Ensures timely preparation of budgets and submits to President for approval.
  • Monitors expenditures within approved budgets.
  • Develops and obtains funding for new programs as appropriate.
  • Recommends new systems/programs/changes to the President based on institutional needs and current trends in human resources.
  • Ensures that human resource policies support the goals of the Hospital. Reviews work of assigned personnel and makes decisions concerning new program, major changes, or problem areas.
  • Evaluates performance, recommends salary increases, promotions, employment, counsels and disciplines as appropriate.
  • Makes presentations to administrative staff concerning such issues as new programs, policies and benefit changes.
  • Maintains professional affiliations as appropriate and participates in activities to keep abreast of developments in hospital administration and human resources.
  • Interacts and collaborates with staff form other Johns Hopkins Medicine functional units in an effort to plan, develop and provide services on an enterprise-wide basis.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts typically acquired through completion of a Master's degree in human resources or labor relations and five to seven years of previous experience at a senior HR management level encompassing at least two functional areas OR, three to five years as a VP in a smaller hospital or healthcare facility.
  • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification preferred.
  • Work requires the analytical skills necessary to plan for, design or enhance highly complex Hospital-wide systems and programs, resolve problems requiring a comprehensive and state-of-the-art awareness of the technology, modern tools and literature in a professional, technical or scientific field, or develop financial and operating plans for a large department/division.
  • Understands and supports the use contemporary business tools, including all forms of social media, as the leader of the Human Resources Division.
  • Work requires the communication skills necessary to effectively manage the employee within assigned departments and to persuade and negotiate with peer-level department heads and/or with external agencies/facilities on issues and programs that impact eh department as well as several other large departments.
