Residential Day Camp Counselor – YMCA Camp Wewa, Apopka, FL

Status: Seasonal (April / May – August)

We are seeking energetic, dependable youth leaders for our junior and senior Camp Counselor positions.  

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • S/he will set the tone of the cabin group, that of high spirits and morale, cooperation, friendliness and helpfulness
  • Get acquainted and build relationships with the campers as soon as they arrive at camp, also to help the campers get acquainted with one another
  • To be concerned with the safety, health, hygiene and cleanliness of each camper including, full use of rest hours and sleeping time, avoidance of fatigue, eating habits, to refer all accidents and illnesses to the camp nurse and monitor hygiene of campers
  • Responsibility for the cleanliness of cabin, surrounding grounds and bathroom facilities at all times
  • Help the cabin group feel a responsibility to the camp through cabin improvement projects and clean-up activities
  • Teach campers proper use and care of equipment and property
  • Encourage active participation in the cabin’s varied activities
  • Initiate, plan, participate and evaluate with the cabin group all cabin activities as well as unit and all camp activities
  • Assume responsibility for an activity area including the development of a progressive program, its operation, evaluation, and award system
  • Provide guidance and be responsible for all counselors, junior counselors and staff aides working with the cabin group.  To assist the Leadership and Program Director in their placement with a cabin and report to him concerning their progress
  • Evaluate each camper at least once during the camp session.  To make these evaluations available to the Camp Director and parents
  • Assist with special programs such as Camp Fires, all camp games, special days, chapel services and Wewa Weekends and group rentals
  • Maintain good public relations with the property owners when cabin groups conduct an activity off the camp property
  • Maintain a friendly, cooperative spirit between members of the staff
  • Cooperate with other staff in matters that affect individual campers
  • Observe all camp regulations which pertain to him as a staff member
  • Make an earnest effort to help campers achieve a significant experience through camping and develop physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually while at camp
  • Assure that all camp/cabin activities/traditions are safe, legal, approved by the Director, and fun
  • Ability to perform moderate physical activity
  • Ability to adapt to changing work conditions
  • Must be able to attend all required camp staff trainings

Job Requirements

To be successful, you must meet some education, training and experience requirements and you must be able to demonstrate some critical knowledge, skills, and physical abilities.

 

  • Must be at least 19 years of age – senior counselor
  • Must be at least 17 years of age – junior counselor
  • 2 years of child care/camping experience preferred – senior counselor
  • Six months child care / camping experience preferred – junior counselor
  • Group leadership experience required
  • Must possess current CPR, AED and First Aid certification
