Permit Technician I

CLASSIFICATION:    Permit Technician I

HOURS:    8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. M-F

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:    

• Graduation from high school or equivalent and a minimum of two years of building related technical and/or clerical experience including customer service; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience, preferably in the field of architecture, engineering, building inspection, construction or contracting.
• Must have demonstrated verbal and written communication abilities, the ability to operate a personal computer to retrieve and input information and the ability to type effectively at 30-40 words per minute.

RESPONSIBILITIES:    

• This is a technical position with significant responsibility that requires careful attention to details, sound judgment and excellent customer skills.
•   Acts as the primary contact for individuals making application for permits.  Ensures that permit applications are completely filled out and all required information, signatures, related forms, plans, calculations and specifications are provided. 
• Verifies that all submitted items comply with Department policies and legal standards for submission for public record. 
• Initializes permit records and files for each permit application. Collects preliminary data such as square footages, occupancy classification and building construction types for verification and approval of plans examiners.
• Works with a considerable degree of independence under the supervision of the Chief Plans Examiner.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  

•  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle objects; and talk or hear. 
• The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. 
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

SALARY:            Salary ranges from $590 - $765 per week.
