This is public safety work, enforcing traffic regulations at or near school crosswalks. The individual in the position works as part of the Traffic Unit for the Police Department, and receives supervision and regular performance evaluations from the supervisor over that unit.
Major Duties:
Reports suspicious and/or unusual activity
Stop traffic flow with sign and hand signals at or near school crosswalks and intersections, to allow pedestrians to safety cross the roadway.
Instruct pedestrians, primarily children, in elements of traffic safety.
Direct pedestrians to remain on curb until all traffic has stopped.
Assist pedestrians with safely crossing a street or roadway.
Minimum Requirements:
Be at least 18 years of age.
A high school diploma or general equivalency diploma is recommended but not required.
Maintenance of a current/valid State of Florida Driver License which meets requirements outlined in the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations Manual as well as any requirements by the City's insurance carrier (at no additional cost, or risk), and determined by the City to be an acceptable driving record history.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Must have the ability to keep calm under pressure.
Must use common sense and sound judgment in dealing with the public, parents and children.
Must have patience with children and the ability to work with them.
Must have the ability to learn traffic control and vehicular direction.
Must have the ability to work with people of different ages and the ability to give instruction in an attempt to educate the public about safe traffic and safety practices.
Must be able to multi task and work in a high vehicular traffic environment.
Must have the ability to receive and carry out written and oral instructions.
Must successfully complete a state certification course with a passing score of 75% or higher and recertify annually.
Must have the ability to physically to and frequently walk or stand, both for extended periods of time without breaks, to run if required; to stoop, bend or carry up to 20 pounds.
Must have the ability to hear adequately and pass a mandatory hearing test.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, the ability to focus and not be color blind.
Must have the ability to physically move quickly enough to avoid hazardous situation such as, vehicular traffic, bicyclists, motorized carts or scooters or any other hazardous.
Must have the ability to primarily work outdoors in varying weather conditions with broad variations in temperature and noise should be expected as a standard part of this job.
Must have reliable transportation.
Must have the ability to be flexible with assigned duty locations and be on time, which may vary from time to time.
Must be able to communicate in English.
Must be able to pass an occupational health medical exam, drug test and background investigation.
Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor/felony involving moral character, false statements, perjury, any act that can classified under the enhancement statute of Domestic Violence, resisting a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, any offense committed upon or in the presence of a child or any other offense related to violence.
