Controller. Full time benefited position.
Position Summary:
Responsible for Orlando Science Center’s accounting and financial reporting operations. Ensures internal control of assets including cash, inventories, property, plant, and equipment. Reporting of operating activities and financial position for month-end and annual audit. Supervision of day-to-day, month-end, and year-end accounting functions including accounts payable, cash receipts, general ledger accounting, and payroll. Reconciliation of balance sheet accounts and analysis of income statement accounts.
Duties/responsibilities:
Accounting and Financial Reporting:
- Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Maintain chart of accounts, fixed asset inventory, and depreciation schedules.
- Responsible for assuring adherence to proper revenue recognition for both contributions (unrestricted, restricted, and in-kind) and earned revenue.Preparation of standard and adjusting journal entries for monthly and year-end financial statements. Posting entries onto the Microsoft Dynamics SL accounting system. Compiling financial transactions for accounts payable, cash receipts, and payroll while ensuring proper accrual entries.Preparation of monthly financial statements to include income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement/forecast and report of capital expenditures utilizing Microsoft Management Reporter.Analyze revenues and expenses vs. budget in order to prepare any necessary adjusting entries or accruals. Review trial balance to ensure that cash transactions, allocations, and prepaid expenses are recorded.Maintain support of balance sheet accounts including cash, receivables, fixed assets, prepaid expense, inventories, accounts payable, program deposits, accrued payroll, and deferred revenue.
- Preparation of supporting schedules for annual audit and IRS Form 990 including statement of financial position, statement of activities, depreciation, statement of cash flows, release of net assets from restriction, and net asset summary.
- Primary point-of-contact for independent auditors during annual audit and tax return preparation.
Supervision and direction of accounting staff:
- Assist, train, and mentor accounting staff in accounts payable, cash receipts, general ledger, and payroll. Includes reviewing coding of accounts payable, cash postings, payroll labor distribution, and approving journal entries.
- Development and training of the Microsoft Dynamics SL accounting system, Excel, and GAAP. Ensure that all software used in Finance is up to date with latest technology.
Other Responsibilities:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
- Interaction with departmental vice presidents, directors, and other business staff throughout the Science Center.
- Ability to effectively communicate accounting and financial principles to nonfinancial colleagues.
- Creating, maintaining, and monitoring internal controls.
- Timely and accurate tax payments and filings including sales tax.
- Direct and facilitate the budgeting process.
Education or Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a major in accounting.
Work Experience:
- 5 years of management level experience. Experience in non-profit accounting preferred.
Required Skills:
- Supervisory experience.
- Proficiency with accounting systems, financial report writers, databases, and spreadsheets.
- Working knowledge of time and attendance software.
