The primary function of this position is to maintain and support, both electrically and mechanically, production and plant support equipment in such a manner that production is maintained with minimum interruption along with helping extend the operating life of machines.

Essential Functions:  The essential job functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Regularly inspect machines and equipment as well as perform electrical/mechanical maintenance work in the press room, bindery, and plant support equipment
  • Inspect and test equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions
  • Perform routine maintenance, such as inspecting drives, motors, or belts, replacing filters, or doing other preventive maintenance actions
  • Diagnose all mechanical and electrical problems and make repairs
  • Diagnose mechanical/electrical problems and determine how to correct them, by checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs as necessary
  • Repair machines, equipment, or structures, using the right tools for the task or equipment such as precision measuring instruments or electrical or electronic testing devices
  • Inspect or test damaged machine parts, and mark defective areas or advise supervisors of repair needs including all machine safety guards and switches
  • Dismantle machines, equipment, or devices to access and remove defective parts
  • Assist in maintaining equipment to keep machine at optimal level of quality, registration, color and production
  • Assist in performing preventative maintenance on press such as lubrication, replacement of small parts, cleaning or minor adjustments to rollers and other small moving parts
  • Ability to complete electrical wiring projects as assigned including 110, 220, 480 voltages.
  • Other duties as assigned

Specific Tasks:

The specific tasks include, however, are not limited to:

  • Promptly, at start of shift, review work schedule, check equipment and supplies required to perform the work scheduled, and prepare for operations
  • At end of shift, secure all equipment and machinery, and complete all required paperwork

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Printing Press and Bindery equipment mechanical and electrical knowledge.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics
  • PLC/Drive trouble shooting abilities
  • Computer skills with background knowledge in the use of Word and Excel
  • Ability to work with outside support over the phone as necessary to trouble shoot downed equipment
  • Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools
  • Troubleshooting and determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it
  • Employ critical thinking using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job
  • Ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position
  • Ability to quickly move your hands, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to  perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials
  • Ability to see and hear machine equipment, safety signals and alarms
  • Ability to use mill, lathe, band saws, and drill press
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to move throughout the plant

Education or Training Requirements:

  • Must be able to use, or learn to use, the equipment and tools used to perform this job
  • Must be able to perform all of the job functions safely
  • Must meet the company performance standards for the job
  • Must agree to wear the proper assigned clothes and shoes approved for this job

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous mechanical and electrical experience in the printing industry to include press and bindery equipment, infrastructure, and facilities
  • PLC/drive experience
  • Ability to read schematic drawing
  • Powered industrial vehicle certification
  • Welding experience with multiple mediums
  • HVAC experience
  • High pressure air compressor experience
