The Medical Assistant is responsible for directly supporting the Medical Director. The primary task is to enter data and notes into Electronic Health Record system. A successful Medical Assistant will be well versed in psychiatry, capable of understanding mental status, and the use of psychotropic medications.

Medical Assistants (MA) must have knowledge of the behavioral healthcare field, medical terminology, use of an electronic health records system and ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow. The MA functions under direct supervision of the physician when determining competencies and performing clinical tasks during patient care.

  • Administrative Duties: Entering/maintaining electronic health records, answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patient medical records, coding and filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services, handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping
  • Clinical Duties: Taking medical histories, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, assisting the physician during exams, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory tests, instructing patients about medication and special diets, preparing and administering medications as directed by a physician, authorizing prescription refills as directed, drawing blood, taking electrocardiograms, removing sutures and changing dressings
  • Patient Liaison: Medical assistants are instrumental in helping patients feel at ease in the physician’s office and often explain the physician's instructions.

JUDGMENT/DECISION MAKING: Must be able to assure consumer confidentiality while maintaining open lines of communication. Must have the ability to identify potential and actual issues relating to the safety of consumers and solve or refer to the appropriate individual. Uses sound judgment in meeting the responsibilities and performing the duties of the position.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Required: High school diploma or GED and at least one (1) year experience in a behavioral health environment.
  • Preferred: Some college with some at least one (1) year experience as a medical assistant.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT: Completes all requirements according to Individual Training Plan within the first six months of hire and annually. Other training and/or professional development may be assigned due to evolution of programs.
