Summary of Position:
The Sheetfed Press Operator is responsible for all aspects of print production on a sheetfed multi-unit press. The ability to understand printing four color process is key. This person will organize make-readies with the crew to minimize downtime and improve throughput. The Sheetfed Press Operator must be able to troubleshoot routine print problems and have a basic mechanical aptitude. They will ensure the safe operation of the equipment and follow all company safety policies.
Essential Functions: The essential job functions include, however, are not limited to those duties listed below.
- Reads instructions from job ticket and sets up or directs setup of press based on instructions
- Coordinates necessary material for the job such as paper, plates, ink, and varnish.
- Setup auto-count for entire job run
- Makes job ready by adjusting print quality, registration, color settings and ink and water balance
- Makes final inspection of rule-out in comparison to supplied content proof, signs off and ensures that other appropriate sign offs are obtained
- Works with client and Supervisor on color OK’s and flags samples
- Consistently inspects for and maintains a high quality of print work
- Ensures samples are of the highest quality
- Conduct time pulls in accordance with Company standards
- Solves print problems such as color sequence, trap and registration
- Verifies correct paper and job counts to ensure accurate paperwork
- Records labor and material charges to job to ensure accurate job costing data
- Adheres to estimated production standards
- Ensures proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals and leftover inks and paper
- Works with department management to train and develop crew; provides opportunities for job knowledge growth
- Ensure that the press crew is properly trained in department procedures, safety practices and adheres to them
- Communicates with peers to exchange job information, press problems experienced during previous shift, ideas to ensure the flow of work and a smooth shift change
- Directs clean-up and assists in keeping immediate work area neat and orderly
- Maintains equipment to keep machine at optimal level of quality, registration, color and production
- Performs preventative maintenance on press such as lubrication, replacement of small parts, cleaning or minor adjustments
- Operates or assists on other pressroom equipment as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to lead and work as a team member
- Ability to effectively communicate with others in a consistent and concise manner
- Ability to work under pressure and supervise daily printing process
- Ability to read, write and understand written and verbal instructions
- Ability to perform basic math
Physical Requirements:
- Mobility to access the building, to move within the plan
- Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted
- Ability to bend, stand and stretch in the course of performing the duties of the position over a 12-hour shift
Required Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years experience operating multiple color sheetfed press with coating
