Universal Orlando Announces New Minimum Wage of $12 per Hour

Starting in February 2019, Universal Orlando will be raising their minimum wage to $12 per hour. The current minimum wage at the theme park resort was set to $10 per hour.

The increase wasn’t totally unexpected, the announcement comes just two months after Walt Disney World Resort revealed plans to pay their workers a minimum of $15 per hour by 2021.

Universal spokesman Tom Schroder said the decision was a “long-planned.”

Both companies are currently in the middle of expanding their theme parks. The pay increases can help them attract a bigger and better workforce to help with those expansions.

“As always, we will continue to review and adjust our rates so that we stay competitive in the market” said Schroder.

These higher wages could have a ripple effect throughout the rest of Central Florida. Not to just direct competitors either, it could pressure other local employers to raise their wages too.
