Commercial Service Technician
Responsibilities:

Present a positive image to customers, co-workers, and others at all times

Follow all service department and company policies and procedures

Adhere to all company safety policies

Attend training to improve HVAC industry knowledge
-
Perform preventative maintenance; identify potential issues (e.g., contactors, relay coils, over-amping devices, loads, transformers, motors)
-
Perform electrical troubleshooting; able to read various wiring diagrams (ladder, schematic, parallel, series circuits)
-
Understand all phases of line voltage (single phase, three phase, part start windings, two-speed motors, variable frequency drives)

Understand general fan laws: RPM, speed, how pulley or sheave changes and belt sizing affect amperage draw

Calculate CFM using heat rise or static pressure method
-
Understand piping systems: refrigerant, water, gas, condensate, pumps, valves (single/two-pipe systems, bypass circuits, modulating valves, circuit setters)
-
Understand water source equipment: water-cooled condensers, chillers, cooling towers, fluid coolers, basic water treatment knowledge
-
Calculate wire sizes, fuses, and circuit breakers for both low and line voltage loads
-
Install and program common DDC controls (e.g., Carrier, Trane)
-
Understand operation differences between VAV and VVT boxes
-
Identify and work with all types of thermostats: low/line voltage, standard, programmable, digital, and time clocks
-
Perform leak detection for water and refrigerant systems
-
Possess knowledge of semi-hermetic compressors (change unloaders, valves, valve plates, internal bypass plugs; diagnose mechanical and electrical failures)

Understand relationships between temperature, pressure, humidity, and their effects on indoor air comfort and quality
-
Understand the purpose and process of test and balance for building performance, pressure control, and comfort
-
Diagnose and repair all types of heating and cooling issues as required
-
Possess all necessary tools to complete tasks listed in the job description
Qualification:
-
Physical activities include standing, balancing, climbing stairs and ladders
-
Must be able to walk and lift 20 pounds or more as part of daily job duties
-
Requires use of upper extremities for forward and overhead reaching, pushing, pulling, and material handling
-
Requires use of torso and lower extremities for kneeling, crawling, stooping, twisting, and squatting
