General Description

The Seminole County Sheriff's Office is now accepting applications for the position of ASSISTANT SUPERVISOR FOR BUILDING SERVICES.


This position involves technical and supervisory work responsible for coordinating the daily activities and functions of maintaining the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, supervision of small projects, supervision of assigned direct reports and assisting the Building Services Supervisor, in support of Sheriff's Office facilities and staff.

Typical Duties

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES: The duties listed below are in addition to the duties assigned under the associated job description. The omission of specific work statements does not necessarily exclude them from being performed by the position and is for illustrative purposes only.


  • Supervision of operational and administrative details associated with repair, renovation, and maintenance requirements for John E Polk Correctional Facility, as directed by the Building Services Supervisor
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates the daily activities of building maintenance technicians and vendors
  • Meets with the Building Services Supervisor on a regular basis to ensure coordination of daily activities with the overall facilities maintenance program of the John E. Polk Correctional Facility
  • Oversees and manages Contractor compliance regarding contractual documents issued for facility maintenance, improvements, renovations, and new construction at the John E Polk Correctional Facility
  • Assembles and researches materials from files/records for use in preparing vendor lists, project scopes of work, technical drawings and other construction related documents
  • Conducts facility inspections on a regular basis, formulates deficiency reports and ensures identified issues are repaired in a timely fashion
  • Supervises inventory operations for Facilities Maintenance parts and supplies and Corrections supplies and ensures that stock levels are properly maintained
  • Ensures timely, proactive, and courteous customer service for all facilities and inventory services provided at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility
  • Initiates and effectively recommends performance evaluations, commendation, and disciplinary actions for assigned personnel
  • Conducts supervisory inquiries as assigned
  • Coordinates training and employee's schedules as required
  • Assists personnel with career development
  • Provides technical assistance to subordinates in the performance of their duties
  • Maintains work order database and tracks maintenance trends
  • Assists the Building Services Supervisor in developing and maintaining Written Directives and General Orders to govern the policies and procedures of the Building Services Division
  • Serves as a liaison to various committees as assigned
  • Performs all duties of subordinate personnel necessary for efficient and effective operations
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as may be necessary in the efficient and effective performance of the position functions

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicant must have a Bachelor's Degree
  • Four (4) years related experience preferred
  • Consideration may be given to equivalent combination of related training, education, and experience
  • Internal applicants must have completed the Seminole County Sheriff's Office one (1) year probationary period
  • Applicant must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in building operations, repair, and maintenance

  • Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in building operations

  • Knowledge of facilities and maintenance best practices

  • Ability to plan, direct and supervise the work of others

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other agencies, employees, and the general public

  • Ability to prepare detailed reports and related documents

  • Ability to read and interpret building construction plans, sketches, and blueprints

  • Ability to traverse job sites which may include uneven and broken ground and the necessity to climb ladders for inspections

  • Ability to work independently in carrying out assignments to completion

  • Ability to make decisions based on factual data

  • Ability to work with detailed information

  • Ability to effectively use computer skills to develop and maintain spreadsheets and prepare written communications

WORKING CONDITIONS

The work environment for this position is in the John E. Polk Correctional Facility. This position may have limited contact with inmates. The position performs duties walking or standing. The position is required to lift at least fifty pounds without assistance. The position generally works during normal business hours with on call status for emergencies.

External applicants for employment will submit to a thorough background investigation, which includes, but not limited to, past employment/education verification, driver license review, credit history, prior drug use history, arrest/conviction record, and computerized voice stress analysis (CVSA) testing. A certified examiner administers the CVSA with questions addressing illegal drug use and general questions of honesty and criminal history. Any dishonesty or deception on the Employment Application will disqualify your application.

The background investigation process may take 3-6 months depending upon the complexity of the applicant's background and position for which you've applied. Applicants selected for employment will be provided a conditional offer and required to submit to a medical examination with drug screening.

An applicant's tattoos and body ornamentation must be disclosed at the time of application and will be documented as part of the agency's review process, even if otherwise meeting the Agency's policy.

Applicants not selected for employment will receive notification from the Human Resources Division, to include justification based on the following disqualifiers: negative background, failure to meet minimum qualifications as outlined in the specific job description, or any additional information discovered during the interview process.
