General Description

The Seminole County Sheriff's Office is now accepting applications for the position of JUVENILE INTERVENTION SPECIALIST.


The Juvenile Intervention Specialist works in the daily supervision of juveniles assigned to the Eugene Gregory Memorial Youth Academy, Consequence Alternative Sanctions Unit and the Sheriff's Work Ethic and Training (S.W.E.A.T.) program under the Juvenile Justice Division.

Typical Duties

Note: Listed functions, duties, responsibilities and skills is not intended to be all-inclusive and the employer reserves the right to assign additional responsibilities as deemed necessary for the operational efficiency of the Sheriff's Office.

  • Provides direct supervision to juveniles assigned to the SWEAT and Consequence Alternative for Youth (CASU) Program. Performs contraband searches of juveniles as needed

  • Conduct daily intake (search and seizure) on all youth that enter the building for the Eugene Gregory Memorial Youth Academy (EGMYA). This includes youth that are enrolled in the GED program and youth that are brought into the STAY center for being truant

  • Conduct Urinalysis as requested by a Juvenile Probation Officer or Supervisor

  • Supervises and instructs juveniles in the work to be assigned and ensures work is being properly performed to standards

  • Provides transportation for juveniles to and from work sites

  • Provide behavior management intervention for juveniles assigned to EGMYA by intervening when necessary to permit the uninterrupted delivery of educational services by the School Board staff

  • Prepares various specialized and statistical reports as required

  • Ensures the cleanliness of the area of assigned responsibility

  • Supervises and interacts with juveniles, male and female, to build rapport and provide positive guidance

  • Communicates effectively and coherently with JIS staff, law enforcement, and SCPS staff using existing communication systems. Demonstrate communication skills in formal settings as required

  • Perform de-escalation functions to include recognizing abnormal behavior and taking appropriate action

  • Performs other duties as required or as may be necessary for the efficient and effective performance of the position functions

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED; Associate's Degree preferred
  • Two (2) years experience working with juveniles or work in the criminal justice system
  • Consideration may be given to equivalent combination of related training, education and experience
  • Must be able to complete PAR curriculum within six (6) months of employment or assignment to this position
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other

Regular and prompt attendance is mandatory in the performance of an employee's duties for this position, to include scheduled work hours, and required training activities, calls for mandatory overtime needs and calls for service during times of an emergency.

Knowledge of Sheriff's Office rules and regulations as applied to the juvenile population in which we serve. Ability to demonstrate ethical and professional behavior; analyze information or situations; synthesize information and/or circumstances; solve problems independently; recall facts and/or information; describe persons, things and/or events; read and comprehend information; show courtesy; speak clearly; prepare written reports. Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner with passengers. Ability to operate heavy machinery i.e. (pressure washer, lawn mowers, gas powered equipment, etc) Ability to work independently without constant supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The work environment for this position is a combination of classroom and outdoor setting(s). The incumbent generally performs work in a standing or walking position for extended periods of time and may require the incumbent to lift up to 50lbs without assistance. This position is required to drive and transport youth to various locations within the County of Seminole. Some evening(s) and weekend(s) will be required. The position involves direct contact with delinquent youth and may require use of force to maintain control.

Mobility-Frequent standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time, stooping, bending, climbing stairs, required to drive an agency vehicle and/or transport juveniles; constant use of a computer

Hearing/Talking-Constant requirement to hear normal speech; constant hearing on telephone and radio; constant talking on telephone/radio

Emotional/Psychological- Potential contact with hostile individuals; exposure to emergency situations; may be exposed to trauma, grief and death; frequent public contact; decision-making and concentration

Special Requirements-Ability to work at least one Saturday a month. Ability to behave respectably and with utmost integrity even when off duty. May be required to respond for any critical incident, manmade or natural.

External applicants for employment will submit to a thorough background investigation, which includes, but not limited to, past employment/education verification, driver license review, credit history, prior drug use history, arrest/conviction record, and computerized voice stress analysis (CVSA) testing. A certified examiner administers the CVSA with questions addressing illegal drug use and general questions of honesty and criminal history. Any dishonesty or deception on the Employment Application will disqualify your application.

The background investigation process may take 3-6 months depending upon the complexity of the applicant's background and position for which you've applied. Applicants selected for employment will be provided a conditional offer and required to submit to a medical examination with drug screening.

An applicant's tattoos and body ornamentation must be disclosed at the time of application and will be documented as part of the agency's review process, even if otherwise meeting the Agency's policy.

Applicants not selected for employment will receive notification from the Human Resources Division, to include justification based on the following disqualifiers: negative background, failure to meet minimum qualifications as outlined in the specific job description, or any additional information discovered during the interview process.
