Manager of Public Programs.  Full time benefited position.  An engaging and outgoing individual is desired to lead the public programming department at the Orlando Science Center. Full-time, benefited position. This position reports directly to the Director of Visitor Experience.  The daily functions of this position will include overseeing the daily operations for the Public Programming department.  Manager of Public Programming will be expected to lead a team of Full Time Science Interpreters, part-time staff and volunteers, complete tasks with minimal supervision, and demonstrate excellent customer service skills.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Must be able to work weekends
  • Works with a high degree of independence on multiple projects in parallel.
  • Perform regular evaluations on live programs and demonstrations
  • Oversee projects and timelines for Full-Time Science Interpreters and Public Programming Coordinator to ensure that projects are delivered in a timely manner
  • Reports regularly on project progress, and oversees budgets and resource allocations as necessary.
  • Oversee programming event days throughout the year.
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills

Expected Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Update online calendar with public programs, events and monthly experiences
  • Communicate updates and upcoming events within the organization to staff in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Hire, train, evaluate and schedule staff for the Public Programming department
  • Ensure all pertinent staff documents and training materials are updated as necessary
  • Ensure website contains accurate information
  • Evaluate live programs and demonstrations to ensure staff and volunteers are exhibiting the standard of quality across the department
  • Coordinate training and schedules for Visitor Experience staff and volunteers
  • Oversee the supply budget for the department.  Ensure supplies for the department are within budget and are being purchased in a timely manner.
  • Manage the Full-Time Science Interpreters project timelines ensuring that projects are meeting their appropriate deadlines and standard for quality experiences

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree in science education, chemistry, physical science, physics, astronomy, or museum studies.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience teaching informally and providing exemplary customer service. 
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of project management and/or direct management experience
  • Strong general science knowledge. 
  • Willingness to learn by studying supplemental material and researching new ideas. 
  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication
  • A valid Florida driver’s license, ability to drive a van, maintain a clear driving record, and retain driving approval through OSC’s insurance company.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Theatrical skills and/or experience performing improv
  • Experience speaking in front of large audiences is desirable.
  • Experience developing curriculum for informal science education facilities
  • Background and experience in any of the following is preferred: planetarium, observatory, animal handling, chemistry labs, physics labs, nursing simulators, STEM, and inquiry based learning projects, theatre management, volunteer management

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to stand for long periods and be able to lift 30 lbs.
