The Orange County Sheriff's Office in Orlando, Florida invites applicants to apply for the position of Long-term Temp Evidence Technician.

Job Summary:

Receives, stores, preserves, and/or disposes of criminal evidence and found property.

Spends at least 65 percent of time performing duties that involve the collection, examination, preservation, documentation, or preparation of human tissues or fluids or physical evidence having potential biological or chemical contamination, or exposure to chemicals, processes, or materials that may have carcinogenic or health-damaging properties in the handling of such evidence. Receives and collects evidence from various Evidence Intake locations within the County. Responds to call out situations to assist, organize, package and take custody of evidence from search warrants and other crime scenes as required. Preserves evidence for storage by ensuring proper packaging, labeling and appropriate storage controls. Documents chain of custody, condition, storage locations and enters data in the computers. Prepares evidence for analysis by initiating the required laboratory documentation forms and transports evidence to and from FDLE. Examines evidence for proper identification, packaging, bio-hazardous properties labeling, integrity and proper disposal requirements. Handles a large inventory of physical evidence not contained in hermetically sealed receptacles and therefore creates a high potential for exposure to biological or chemical hazard contamination that may have carcinogenic or health-damaging properties. Exposed to chemicals, firearms, narcotics, bio-hazardous materials (such as air/blood borne pathogens, bodily excretions, contagious diseases, such as HIV, Tuberculosis, MRSA, Hepatitis and molds) in field, security vaults/lockers or warehouse environments. 

Retrieves property for citizens and deputies as requested. Conducts inventory of firearms, drugs, currency, and general property. Audits evidence for procedural compliance.

Testifies in court hearings about work performed. Remains available for call outs to crime scenes in order to collect large volumes of evidence and confiscated property.

Operates forklift and pallet jack.  Performs heavy lifting.

Performs administrative functions to include data entry, categorizing, documentation, labeling property, collating files, answering phone and assists deputies and the public with the release of evidence and found property.

Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • U.S. Citizen or possess a current permanent resident card.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • One (1) year experience in records, inventory or a related field preferred.
  • Forklift and pallet jack experience preferred. Must be able to complete National Safety Council Forklift Operator certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must have valid Florida driver’s license. Use of agency vehicle would require appropriate driving history and passing agency biennial driver’s physical exam.
  • Ability to transport evidence which can include driving a cargo van and/or a box truck vehicle.
  • The employee must frequently lift 25-50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Clean criminal history; any arrest history will be individually evaluated
  • No illegal drug usage within the past two years, all other usage will be evaluated on an individual basis
  • Must have basic computer skills to include using word processing, email, spreadsheets, and database applications (e.g., Excel, Adobe Creative Suite, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint).  

Salary Range: $14.64/hour or $30,451/year
