The Orange County Sheriff's Office in Orlando, Florida invites applicants to apply for the position of Long-term Temp Civilian Background Investigator, Part-time (36-39 hours week).

JOB SUMMARY:

Utilizes investigative techniques to conduct background investigations on applicants for various positions within the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • U.S. Citizen or possess a current permanent resident card
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Clean criminal history; any arrest history will be individually evaluated.
  • No illegal drug usage within the past two years, all other usage will be evaluated on an individual basis.
  • Ten (10) years of prior law enforcement officer experience or related investigative experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be FCIC/NCIC certified within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must have a valid Florida driver’s license. Must attend and successfully complete the agency sponsored Law Enforcement Vehicle Operations (LEVO) Training if assignment includes driving agency vehicle. Use of agency vehicle would require appropriate driving history and passing agency biennial driver’s physical exam.
  • Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English.
  • Must have basic computer skills to include word processing, data base, and spreadsheet applications.
  • Must have good organizational skills.
  • Ability to complete investigations by requesting information in person, in writing, via telephone conversations and through computer queries.
  • Ability to review complete file content looking for inaccuracies and verifying all information within the application and testing material.  Ability to verify the following information: past employers, education, graduation records, personal references, military service/selection service, neighbor references, civil and previous residence checks.
  • Ability to contact Criminal Justice Standards & Training Commission / Police Officers Standards & Training to verify certification in law enforcement and former law enforcement service standing in state served.
  • Ability to verify that all required documents are in the file and are authentic.
  • Ability to run criminal (FCIC/NCIC) and Driver’s License histories to include local records checks, civil checks, out of state checks and out of country checks.
  • Ability to document all responses and information from appropriate sources (to include possible canvassing of neighborhoods and conducting interviews).
  • Ability to analyze all information and formulate into positive and negative findings.
  • Ability to type summary of applicant’s completed background investigative findings.
  • Ability to prepare routine correspondence, memos, reports, and other documents.
  • Ability to file and maintain confidential and sensitive information. Logs data in computer.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, vendors, and the general public.
  • May travel occasionally to other agencies within the state to conduct file reviews of current/former law enforcement officers.
  • May be required to present background related information before groups in informational meetings.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior or current Law Enforcement Officer Certification/Investigative Experience
  • Prior or current Law Enforcement Applicant Background Investigations Experience
  • Prior or current NITV CVSA Examiner Certification

ADDITIONAL PROCESSING:

  • Phone interview, if selected.
  • Panel Interview, if passing phone interview.

SALARY:  $17.81/hour – $18.35/hour (depending on level of experience)
