JOB SUMMARY: The Associate Figure Animation (FA) Technical Designer is responsible for technical support of the 3D FA development pipeline and on-site programming efforts of Figure Animation, Animated Props, and Show Action Equipment elements of theme park attractions. Works in close collaboration with the: FA Technical Designers, FA Animators, FA Show Design Director, Show Producer, Creative Director, Attraction Designers, Project Engineers, Media team. and third party vendors. Provides technical expertise to identify risks and assists in development of character performances that create the illusion of life and the meet the creative intent of the attraction.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborates closely with FA Technical Designers, FA Animators, FA Show Design Director, attraction design team, Creative Director, Attraction Designers, media design team, 3rd party media vendors and project engineers to conceive, develop, direct and model FA elements, which are dimensional characters known at Universal as Figure Animation. Works closely with Universal Creative Engineering & Safety and Advanced Technology Interactives to leverage emerging technologies in FA animation techniques, media delivery, ride systems, show action equipment, and special effects to enhance Guest experiences and expand strategic Universal Parks & resorts systems Intellectual Property.
  • Collaborates with FA Technical Designers, FA animators and other project team members during pre-production, production, installation and post-turnover efforts along with 3rd party media vendors to ensure FA design and production efforts meet the physical, mechanical and control, parameters of the attractions Creative Intent, with a focus on mechanical and control design viability.
  • Will assist in programming show elements and supporting FA Animators in on-site programming efforts. Focus on providing motion/data profiles for Animated Props, Show Action Equipment and special effects. Is generally responsible for helping the FA Technical Designer for maintaining operational readiness of programming equipment for the FA team.
  • Supports the 3D simulation process and development of SolidWorks models in FA development to help drive important business decisions, including but not limited to design intent, mechanical design parameters and guest and team member safety. Participates in development and use of simulation and analysis tools designed to assist this process.
  • Supports development of CG pipeline tools to better support FA Animators and FA Associate Technical Designers in the FA development process.
  • Collaborates with Universal Creative Engineering & Safety team to capture biometric data necessary to test and ensure FA safety and safe working conditions for team members.
  • Supports show documentation and data archiving for ride and figure programming for internal archiving and use by park maintenance.
  • Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SCOPE: Responsible for collaborating on the design, production and installation of the ride/show systems.

EDUCATION: High school degree or GED is required. Bachelors degree: Motion Design, Interaction Design or related field is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-3 years using SolidWorks
  • 1-3 years using waveform editor software similar to those used in computer animation or MIDI music editors
  • Must have experience with Figure Animation development and/or programming.
  • Strong proven experience in animation and motion design (theme park, software, web, television and film), within a collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency in using Adobe products: Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, & AfterEffects
  • Ability to design content and visuals for presentation.
  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong motion sensibilities with a good understanding of kinematics and dynamics and excellent problem solving skills.
  • The ability to work well in a collaborative team environment
  • Competency as a generalist in areas of 3D content creation including modeling, texturing, rigging, lighting, effects animation and rendering
  • Working knowledge of Maya and SolidWorks; Knowledge of AutoCad, 3DMax and computer modeling software
  • Demonstrated mechanical design skills
  • Demonstrated 3D rigging, game character TD, or similar experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the following:
    1. MEL scripting and/or Python scripting
    2. Software development C++ or similar common platform
    3. Mechanical design/engineering
    4. Control design/engineering
    5. Human/animal kinematics and anatomy
    6. Embedded system design/development
    7. Fast prototyping
    8. Electronics
    9. Figure Finishing/Fabrication
  • Knowledge of new technologies, authoring environments, prototyping and user interface design is preferred
  • Proficiency in using Adobe products: Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, & AfterEffects
