We are seeking Before and After School Counselors that will support the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. This individual will provide direct supervision of a group of children in our before and/or after school program (grades 6th – 8th).  They will create positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. The ideal candidate is passionate about supporting middle school youth, promotes the potential of all participants in the program, and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall before/after school experience.

  1. Denn John MS- After School Program - 2001 Denn John Ln, Kissimmee, FL 34744
  2. St. Cloud MS- After School Program - 1975 Michigan Ave, St. Cloud, FL 34769
  3. Horizon MS- Before and After School Programs - 2020 Ham Brown Rd, Kissimmee, Fl 34746

Typical Hours of Operations:

After School Programs are M,T,Th,F- 4 PM-6 PM and Wednesdays from 3 PM-6 PM.

Before School program are M-F, 7 AM-9 AM

Essential Functions:

  1. Take responsibility for the leadership and guidance of a group of participants.
  2. Acquaint children with rules, activities, daily scheduled, and traditions of the program.
  3. Take responsibility for the safety/welfare of each child.
  4. Remain in the immediate area assisting in supervision during all activities including aquatics.
  5. Assist with organizing, and implementing activity plans for special interest activities.
  6. Assist with assuring proper sign in/sign out procedures are followed.
  7. Establish positive relationship with each child.
  8. Communicate progress of child to immediate supervisor.
  9. Monitor the needs of all children; treats each child with respect, dignity and as an individual.
  10. Report any suspicions of child abuse to Supervisor as required by Florida State Law.
  11. The YMCA prohibits from taking photos or videos of participants in their care or in any Y program without the direct permission from the YMCA Association Office and parental consent.
  12. Follow medication and food allergy policy.
  13. Takes responsibility for all equipment and supplies used, helping maintain good working conditions, inventory and cleans-up after all activities.
  14. Assists in meeting and maintaining YMCA Before/ After School Best Practices.
  15. Reports all accidents to the Supervisor, and properly completes proper health log and/or accident/incident form.
  16. Attends required staff meetings and training sessions.
  17. Assists in maintaining cleanliness of entire facility and report broken equipment and/or possible safety hazards.
  18. Participate in special events.
  19. Keep accurate attendance and headcount records.
  20. Report all hours worked accurately and in a timely manner to Supervisor.
  21. Remain up to date on emergency procedures, as well as Middle Schools Program and County Public specific Schools policies.
  22. Direct or assist in the daily maintenance of the school and YMCA facility area, ensuring safety and cleanliness.
  23. Promote and represent the mission and core values of the YMCA of Central Florida in the Family Center and its programs.
  24. All other duties assigned by Management.

Qualifications: 

  1. High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  2. Previous experience working with children preferably in an after school setting or childcare center, preferred.
  3. At least 18 years of age, unless approved by the HR Director and a Vice President.
  4. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  5. Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
