Overview

The Orange County Corrections Department (OCCD) has become one of the largest county detention facilities in the nation. Situated on a 76-acre secure compound in Orlando, Florida, OCCD has the capacity to detain up to 4,100 inmates on any given day.Strong working relationships between the 1,700 certified and civilian staff are valued at OCCD, as is the rich history and proud tradition passed down through the many generations of employees.

Orange County Corrections is seeking highly skilled individuals to fill the position of Registered Nurse (RN). The individual will perform nursing duties requiring skills and judgment in the care and treatment of patients in a correctional setting using nursing principles and techniques for a variety of the inmates’ medical needs.  

A Correctional nurse position offers an experience in a unique mix of public health, community health and emergency care environment.  

Representative Duties

General Function

Provides medical care, treatments, medication and clinical oversight in conjunction with medical providers to patients at the Orange County Jail. The RN is responsible for accurately completing physical assessments, sick call triage and signing off orders per Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).  The RN is responsible for maintaining compliance standards related to Corrections Health Services patients, ensuring that all logs and counts are completed per policy.  Direct supervision is received from the nursing supervisor who evaluates performance through observation, discussion, and review of reports and inspections.

Representative Duties

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

Monitors medication administration timeliness per SOP, compliance by inmates and effectiveness of medications in accordance with established protocols.  Reports and responds to variances in treatment regimens to the provider.

  • Conducts a physical assessment in response to inmate complaints, establishes a nursing diagnosis and refers to the provider, and provides the treatment ordered.
  • Conducts physical assessments, tests and sick call triage per SOP.
  • Maintains unit compliance for inspections.
  • Participates in in-service training and mandatory continuing education.
  • Responds to all emergencies.
  • Obtains samples and other specimens for laboratory examinations.
  • Assists physicians in clinic areas.               
  • Provides routine clinic tasks as needed.
  • Responsible for the assisting with education of staff on their units.
  • Supervision of line staff and daily operations of the clerical areas.
  • Other related duties as assigned. 

    Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited RN program.

Must possess a current Florida license as a registered nurse.

Must be able to work a variety of 12 hour shifts; including nights and weekends. Day or Night shift available

Proficient in the use of computers.
