SERVICE WORKER/EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
(Utilities)
*As with many of the hourly (non-exempt) positions with Polk County, this position is a contract to hire position meaning that it is staffed through Ad-Vance Talent Solutions, a business partner of Polk County, for a probationary period before being considered for hire directly with the county.*
Pay Rate: $12.74/hr.
Shift: Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM (40 hours/week)

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Primary operation of construction and maintenance equipment listed below at least 50% of work effort. Duties include performance of manual laboring tasks. Operates one or more of the following:
5 -Yard Dump Truck Front End Loader
Backhoe Flat Bed Dump Truck
Skid Loader Boom/crane truck mounted
May operate small gasoline or other powered machinery such as concrete mixers, air hammers, compressors, pumping equipment and saws. Operates heavier equipment on a temporary, emergency or trainee basis. Washes and cleans and provides routine maintenance on equipment. Performs manual laboring tasks as assigned.
Repairs broken water lines. Installs and repairs fire hydrants. Installs and sets water meters.
Taps main water lines. Installs water mains. Locates and repairs sewer lines. Checks out
complaints. Stocks service vehicles with inventory and supplies. Emergency operation as
necessary of backhoe, sewer cleaning machine and boring machine. Does routine maintenance
and minor repairs on all the Division's equipment. Performs duties as Utilities Service Worker I
in the daily routine if required. Maintenance and installation of utility mains and facilities as
required. May direct and oversee the work of others as required.
Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and use of assigned equipment. Knowledge of traffic and other regulations governing the use of equipment. Ability to see, hear at a normal level, ambulate independently,
drive from work site to work site, bend, stoop, sit and stand. Ability to perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination including the use of multi-hand and/or foot controls. Ability to lift, carry materials and interact with job related appurtenances which may weigh up to forty-five (45) pounds. Ability to learn the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable in the operation of equipment. Ability to make routine maintenance checks and emergency repairs to equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work in all weather and environmental conditions (i.e.: sun, rain, cold, swamp, ditches, dirt and hot asphalt).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of one (1) year experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of water distribution and sewer collection facilities; and six (6) months experience in the operation and routine maintenance of the primary piece of equipment assigned to the work unit.
Must have appropriate Water Distribution License or obtain within (1) year of hire date. Rule 62-699 by the FDEP.
Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida Commercial Class "B" driver's license at the time of employment within this classification. Must have a home telephone as employee is subject to call out which may include after-hours duty to assist in emergencies.
A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications with the exception of licensure.
