Security Officer I

THIS IS A POOL POSITION FOR OUR MULTIPLE LOCATIONS. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis and reviewed when openings become available. Applications remain active for one year from the date received. Hiring departments will review applications only when positions become available


Ensures traffic safety, protection of college property, students, and personnel and the preservation of good order and offers assistance to college personnel, students, and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.  Officers are assigned to rotating shifts, and shift assignments are based on department need.


  • Patrols college property in an effort to prevent unauthorized loitering, parking, thefts, and other crimes.  Requires the ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Regulates parking and traffic to prevent accidents and congestion; and issues citations for parking violations.  Requires the ability to distinguish colors.
  • Opens and locks down buildings at the close of classes and operation; records information on persons entering buildings after business hours; and identifies persons on college property when the college is closed.  Requires the ability to climb stairs on a regular basis.
  • Offers assistance to college personnel, students, and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.  Requires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Responds to emergencies of a medical, criminal and mechanical nature.  Requires the ability to run when necessary, maneuver in small spaces, and lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Investigates incidents that occur, interviews participants and witnesses, completes incident reports, and documents the issues.
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.


  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license or a valid driver’s license from another state with the ability to obtain a Florida driver’s license within 30 days of employment.
  • Certified in CPR/First Aid/AED. If not currently certified, must become certified within 6 months of employment. Certification must be kept current and active.
  • Security or related training certificate that meets or exceeds security requirements under Florida Statute 493 Class D License required. Certification must be kept current and active.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing various Microsoft Office programs (i.e. Word, Excel) and other applicable software programs (i.e. Security Camera/Access Control Monitoring).


  • Experience as a security officer/guard or in a position with similar duties.


  • Due to the need for emergency adjustments of work schedules or for campus emergencies, the following are necessary for this position:

                         a.  In-residence telephone service or cell phone
                         b.  Dependable transportation

This position is eligible for Veteran’s preference.


  • Knowledge of security operations and procedures.
  • Ability to enforce regulations consistently.
  • Ability to describe people and objects in accurate detail and memorize incidents occurring on campus.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and its software, compose concise and comprehensive reports in Microsoft Word or other Incident Reporting software and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor and interact effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment under routine or adverse conditions.
  • Ability to work different shifts and on various campus locations.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, as well as critical thinking ability and ability to make quick decisions in emergency situations.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.


  • Works primarily outdoors and is exposed to sun and other weather conditions.
  • Flexible work locations and hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to run when necessary, maneuver in small spaces, and lift and carry up to 50lbs.
  • Travel between buildings and campuses.
  • Acceptable eyesight with/without corrective aid and ability to distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to walk or remain stationary for long periods and regularly climb stairs.
  • Employees of the Campus Safety and Security Department shall present a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance while on duty.  It is the intent of the department that all personnel shall be dressed appropriately, consistent with their assigned duties.   • Final hire/appointment of a candidate offered employment in this position is contingent upon the candidate's successful completion of a job-related physical ability assessment.
  • Current employees may be referred for a job-related physical ability assessment or reassessment upon their supervisor’s recommendation and subsequent approval by the Office of Human Resources, or upon the recommendation of the Office of Human Resources.

Conditions of Employment

Finalists and individuals recommended for employment at Seminole State College may be subject to background investigations and fingerprinting in compliance with Florida Statute 1001.64; and Seminole State College Policy 1.020; 2.020. Criminal background checks and fingerprinting will be conducted for all new employees, and for rehired employees who have had a break in service for one year or more. The Office of Human Resources will determine which background checks shall be conducted for each position, based upon its review of job descriptions and the responsibilities of the position. These include, but are not limited to, positions that have access to money, master keys, security-sensitive areas and confidential information; positions that have the capability to create, delete, and alter records; and positions that are responsible for the care and instruction of children.
