Pay Ranges:

Environmental Technician I Mosquito Control - $14.99/hr. - $18.64/hr.

Environmental Technician II Mosquito Control - $16.53/hr. - $20.57/hr.

Environmental Technician III Mosquito Control - $18.03/hr. - $22.48/hr.

Shift: Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM (40 hours/week)

MAJOR FUNCTION

Environmental Technician I

Technical field work within a comprehensive environmental control program.

Environmental Technician II

Skilled technical field work within a comprehensive environmental control program.

Environmental Technician III

Advanced technical field work within a comprehensive environmental control program. May act as lead worker on mosquito spray crews.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Environmental Technician I

Progressively responsible field work assisting in operating light and medium vehicles and spray application equipment controlling larval and adult mosquitoes, found in mosquito breeding habitats.

Physically operates larvicide and adult mosquito spray equipment in compliance with County policies and state and federal label guidelines. Responsible for insuring proper mixture and application of insecticides. Observes operational conditions making any necessary adjustments and/or reports defects. Assists with identifying, evaluating and treating mosquito breeding and resting areas in specific regions of the County. Assists with mosquito habitat inspections. Investigates service requests and operates special traps utilized for mosquito surveillance.

Keeps accurate records of work performed and chemicals used. Will be trained to count and identify larval and adult mosquitoes and records results. Enters data into computerized database.

Responsible for performing simple field repairs of equipment. Provides general and preventive maintenance of spray equipment and assigned vehicles (i.e.: washes, cleans, polishes and makes minor repairs to equipment and spray apparatus).

May be required to work irregular hours or shifts.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Environmental Technician II

Field work operating light and medium vehicles and spray application equipment controlling larval and adult mosquitoes, found in mosquito breeding habitats.

Physically operates larvicide and adult mosquito spray equipment in compliance with County policies and state and federal label guidelines. Responsible for insuring proper mixture and application of insecticides. Observes operational conditions making any necessary adjustments and/or reports defects. Identifies, evaluates and treats mosquito breeding and resting areas in specific regions of the County. Assists with mosquito habitat inspections. Environmental Technician III

Primarily responsible for acting as a lead worker of a mosquito inspection and control team, driving and operating light/medium vehicles and all-terrain vehicles, airboats and fork-lift. Physically operates larvicide and adult mosquito spray equipment in compliance with county policies and state and federal label guidelines. Responsible for ensuring the proper mixture and application of insecticides. Observes operational conditions making any necessary adjustments and/or reporting defects. Identifies, evaluates and treats mosquito breeding and resting areas in specific regions of Polk County. Investigates service requests and operates special traps utilized for mosquito surveillance.

Keeps accurate records of work performed and chemicals used. Counts and identifies larval and adult mosquitoes and records results. Enters data into computerized database. Reviews data entry for accuracy. Responsible for performing some field repairs of equipment. Provides general and preventive maintenance of spray equipment and assigned vehicles (i.e.: washes, cleans, polishes and makes minor repairs to equipment and spray apparatus).

Assists the Division's professional staff with mosquito source reduction projects and insecticide efficacy trials. Advises the public of general operation methods and procedures. Reports difficult or unusual situations to supervisor. Assists Supervisor with inventorying, ordering, and maintaining supplies and/or storage/placement of supplies including various insecticides and chemicals. Provide verbal employee performance information to Supervisor. Trains new employee(s).

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Environmental Technician I

  • Ability to learn to use taxonomic keys and identify mosquitoes to genus and species.

• Ability to lift a minimum of forty-five (45) pounds, 40- 50 pounds regularly and 80-100 pounds occasionally.

• Ability to provide first aid.

• Ability to use and provide preventive maintenance and emergency repairs of equipment.

• Ability to think and react calmly and responsively to emergency situations.

• Ability to work independently.

• Ability to work with and around various chemicals.

Customer-service skills. Should be friendly and polite when they interact with internal/external customers and vendors.

Detail oriented. Because of the use and application of pesticides, need to be able to follow instructions carefully in order to prevent harm to citizens, the environment, and themselves. Must keep accurate records chemicals they use.

Physical stamina. May spend hours on their feet, often crouching, kneeling, and crawling. Able to withstand uncomfortable weather and environmental conditions (i.e. heat, rain).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Environmental Technician I

Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma.

Must have a basic understanding and knowledge of biology or environmental systems.

Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment within this classification.

A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Environmental Technician II

Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of two (2) years' experience in mosquito control/related experience.

Must have a current Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Health Pest Control License.

Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment within this classification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with identification of mosquitoes of Florida

• Experience with domestic mosquito inspections

Environmental Technician III

Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of three (3) years' experience in mosquito control/related experience.

Must have a current Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Health Pest Control License which includes CORE certification.

Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment within this classification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Advanced Mosquito Control Certification

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN I

Must pass the Core and Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Health Pest Control License within one (1) year of employment.

Must pass respirator physical.

Because environmental technicians can be exposed to hazards from equipment, chemicals, or toxic materials, they must follow proper safety procedures, such as wearing hazmat suits and sometimes respirators, even in warm weather.

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.

ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN II

Must pass respirator physical.

Because environmental technicians can be exposed to hazards from equipment, chemicals, or toxic materials, they must follow proper safety procedures, such as wearing hazmat suits and sometimes respirators, even in warm weather.
