Rollins College is currently seeking a full-time Waste Technician/Project Custodian to join their team! As part of the Facility Management team, this role will coordinate refuse needs between all facility departments and will need to operate as part of a team whose primary responsibility will be to perform custodial services for academic, administration, and residential buildings.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Waste Technician
  • Removing all refuse across campus from collection areas.
  • Clearing chutes from residential halls as needed.
  • Emptying trash dumpsters from designated areas; this includes weekly washing and sanitizing of all dumpsters.
  • Removing all recycle materials campus wide with separate vehicle and disposing of in designated recycle dumpsters for pick up by Waste Management.
  • Coordinating yard waste pick up with Grounds department leads.
  • Washing, cleaning, and deodorizing trash truck.
  • Greasing all fittings on trash truck and logging service.
  • Checking oil, water, and tire pressure.
  • Coordinating with auto shop for regular scheduled maintenance.
  • Making off-campus trips to Orange County Landfill and Convanta Lake Inc. along with diesel filling station in a safe and timely manner as needed.
  • Purchasing fueling waste collection vehicles, small tools, equipment and hardware. All purchases must be reconciled via Chrome River.
  • Notifying manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, property damage, unsafe situations, or service-related issues.
  • Preforming pre- and post- trip inspections of assigned vehicles and documents any safety concerns.
  • Operating vehicles in accordance with the Department of Transportation requirements as well as all local, state and federal laws.
  • Project Custodian
  • Dusting, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, striping, and waxing floors. Operating equipment such as scrubbers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, and carpet cleaners.
  • Cleaning glass doors, windows, and mirrors; dusting walls, furniture, and light fixtures; emptying waste containers, separating recyclable items.
  • Assisting in transport of surplus furniture, relocating in room furniture, books, equipment, etc.
  • Warehousing, storage, and inventory of all event furniture.
  • Safely using and handling various equipment
  • Completing tasks with proper use of equipment, tools and technology systems related to performance of assigned responsibilities.
  • Assisting with special events when needed - setup, breakdown, cleaning tables, emptying trash containers, rearranging furniture, etc.
  • Reporting unusual room conditions or areas in need of repair to Facilities Services team.
  • Providing relief for other positions in custodial department as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires at least six (6) months job-related experience.
  • Requires a valid Florida driver’s license and satisfactory MVR to operate college vehicles.
  • Must hold a current Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with an air brake endorsement.
  • Ability to to read, write, and follow basic instructions in English.
  • Ability to operate box truck, pallet jack and miscellaneous small equipment.
  • Ability to perform a variety of heavier tasks in the care of buildings and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions for diagrams, event setups and complete written paperwork regarding projects.
  • Ability to adapt to different situations during the course of the day and changes to schedules.
  • Demonstrates cross-cultural awareness and communication skills to maximize effective collaboration across diverse groups on-campus.
  • Physical role requiring heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, bending twisting, and kneeling. Prolonged standing and walking to various areas around campus to access and clean rooms, including climbing stairs.
  • Modeling and delivering Rollins’ service philosophy through competent, collaborative, responsive and respectful service to others.
  • Demonstrates ability to work professionally with staff, faculty, students and external constituents at all levels.

  • Comply with all department policies, procedures and service delivery expectations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Work Schedule:

  • The Waste Technician/Project Custodian is scheduled to work 7.5 hours/day, 37.5 hours per week. The schedule for this role is:
  • Monday-Friday, 7:00am to 3:00pm (with a 1 hour paid lunch)
  • As a condition of employment in this position, the incumbent will be subject to call in outside of regular hours in order to respond to emergencies, including the preparation and maintenance of College facilities, grounds, systems and services during inclement weather crises.

*Works overtime, special events and weekends may be required as needed.

Work Environment:

  • Works on-campus at multiple work sites including indoors and outdoors.
  • Work requires physical exertion and exposure to both hot and cold weather.
  • Physical ability to exert physical effort, i.e. handle, lift and/or carry heavy objects and equipment.
  • Must be punctual and reliable; daily attendance is required.
