ROAD RANGER (Roadside mechanic)
This position will be responsible for providing assistance to stranded motorists. Assistance may include, but is not limited to, changing flats, jump-starting batteries, clearing disabled vehicles from travel lanes, removing minor non-hazardous spills and debris from traffic lanes. Provide firsthand information to law enforcement agencies on fatalities, damage, and spills from traffic lanes. Incumbent in this position is eligible to participate in the Bloodborne Pathogen Program.
The Road Ranger Program is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and State Farm Insurance.
• Provides minor mechanical assistance to stranded motorists.
• Performs assistance such as changing flats, jump starting batteries, clearing disabled vehicles from travel lanes, removing minor non-hazardous spills and debris from travel lanes, etc.
• Interacts with general public providing assistance and information.
• Interacts with law enforcement agencies on fatalities, damage, spills, etc.
• Documents activities per department requirements.
• Abides by FDOT contract responsibilities.
• Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.
High School diploma or GED plus one (1) year of experience in vehicle maintenance plus one (1) year of technical school; or an equivalent combination of related education, training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
• Knowledge of diagnostic and troubleshooting techniques on all types of vehicles.
• Skills in operating basic shop equipment and tools.
• Skills in interpersonal communication.
• Ability to efficiently perform work on vehicles in all weather conditions with all types of problems, in a fast-paced working environment.
• Ability to project a positive LYNX attitude.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work with Law Enforcement Agencies, Inventory Control Clerks and First Responders to traffic incidents.
• Ability to bend, stoop, walk, stretch, kneel, and lift 50 lbs.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Ability to work with commercial cleaners and toxic materials.
• Ability to provide own tools.
• Ability to pass an in depth FDLE background check.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

Work Environment and Special Considerations:
• Will be available to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Works in and around busy roadways and in varying weather conditions.
• Must be able to obtain a CDL Class B permit with airbrakes and passenger endorsement and successfully pass the LYNX CDL training and obtain CDL license within 12 months of hire. Must be able to successfully pass DOT physical and obtain Medical Examiner’s Certificate for a minimum of one year upon obtaining CDL license.
• Incumbent is eligible to participate in the Bloodborne Pathogen Program.
• LYNX provides the community with much needed public transportation, and it is important for the Agency to resume its services as quickly and as safely as possible in the event of any natural, technological, or human-caused emergency or disaster. This position is considered a mission critical member of LYNX’s emergency preparation and response efforts during an emergency or disaster and as such, may be asked to work during these emergencies or disasters.
