Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Regulatory Financial Compliance
- Design and steward effective financial compliance strategies, systems and processes to ensure the College’s adherence to legal and regulatory obligations.
- Develop and maintain a financial compliance matrix for the College to document compliance requirements and designated compliance owners.
- Plan, prepare and review the College’s Form 990 and 990-T, in accordance with current tax laws and regulations.
- Monitors and reviews activities within College units to ensure compliance with federal and state UBIT laws.
- Answers miscellaneous tax questions from operational units.
- Monitor compliance with complex IRS rules and regulations, devising tax strategies to defer or eliminate tax liability exposure.
- Ensures timely required tax payments regulatory agencies, and keeps detailed records for monitoring and reporting purposes.
- Monitors and updates all policies and procedures related to tax compliance.
- Perform bond compliance activities and private use evaluations, as needed.
- Work closely with leadership and compliance owners to identify compliance issues and collaboratively develop recommendations and response plans for issues of noncompliance.
- Registrations and Reporting
- Manages donor solicitation registration in foreign states.
- Assists with state nexus research and related compliance initiatives.
- Serves as a resource for Senior Accountant responsible for handling state sales tax filings.
- Oversee College’s property tax filing and payments.
- Oversee the tax status determination and tax withholding/exemption on foreign national individuals and companies.
- Manage the data input and financial reporting of College’s ancillary functions from third-party systems.
General Accounting
- Participates in key areas of monthly financial processes, such as account reconciliation, preparation of journal vouchers and general ledger maintenance, to ensure timely and accurate reporting on the general ledger.
- Provides support for the fiscal year-end audit and other duties as assigned.
Other
- Assist in the implementation of any new FASB accounting pronouncements.
- Support the business activities of the College and perform advanced accounting functions ensuring conformity with generally accepted accounting standards.
- Cross training with other accounting functions as needed.
- Minimum Qualifications & Skillsets:Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- At least five (5) years of tax and accounting experience.
- Extensive knowledge of accounting and financial reporting standards.
- Experience in writing simple queries.
- Analytical abilities are necessary in order to formulate detailed financial spreadsheets, using spreadsheet software with a good understanding of accounting principles and theories and the ability to apply those principles/theories to unique situations.
- Possess strong organizational abilities, coupled with the ability to prioritize tasks given the many reporting requirements and deadlines during peak times of the year.
- Ability to handle detailed, confidential, legal and personal information as well as situations with a high degree of discretion.
- Ability to analyze complex situations and to make sound judgments and decisions.
- Ability to meet strict deadlines, prioritize tasks, and work independently.
- Ability to communicate effectively and to interact respectfully and productively.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA or advanced degree.
- Experience working in higher education.
- Two or more years of substantive functional experience with Banner (or another ERP system).
Work Environment:
- Working in-person, on campus, in an office environment.
- Work may require long time periods without significant interaction with co-workers or other people.
- Work requires visual strain due to computer usage.
- Overtime may be required as needed.
