The Accountant I is responsible balancing and analyzing the general ledger, including recording, classifying, processing and supplying accounting data; preparing financial statements; reconciling bills and accounts; performing trending analysis; creating ad-hoc reports; and developing, monitoring, and adhering to internal controls.



  • Balances and analyzes general ledger and closes funds for financial statements.
  • Establishes and maintains project accounting records-including all Capital Improvement Project (CIP) accounting and reporting.
  • Analyzes expenditures, revenues, budget and other ledgers.
  • Prepares journal entries as required.
  • Prepares monthly financial reports for revenues, expenditures, budget and other ledgers.
  • Reconciles accounts payable transactions.
  • Reconciles the monthly health and benefits invoices.
  • Responsible for providing all necessary data to the City’s Actuaries for the completion of pension and other post employments benefits annual valuation.
  • Serves as the City’s General Employee Pension Plan administrator.
  • Ensures integrity of financial information system.
  • Assists in preparation of various reports as identified.
  • Assists in the preparation of payroll and payroll related duties.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field with two years of applicable experience in accounting.
  • Experience in government accounting is highly desirable.


Exceptions to the minimum qualifications must be reviewed by the Human Resources Director and approved by the City Manager prior to job offer.



  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Extensive knowledge of accounting, financial and management principles, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of data processing, systems developments and implementations.
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations effective in the State of Florida and City relating to the fiscal and accounting records.
  • Knowledge of the principles of automated on-line data processing as related to collecting, controlling, depositing and safeguarding procedures involving cash receipt controls.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial information and prepare and present detailed financial analyses and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Work is performed in a normal office setting and is mainly sedentary in nature, requiring extended periods of standing and sitting; intermittent bending, stooping, crouching, walking, reaching, and pushing/pulling/lifting/moving items up to 10 pounds; and infrequent lifting, moving, pushing, and pulling of moderate objects up to 20 lbs.
  • Requires visual and muscular dexterity and hand/eye coordination for extended periods, hearing sounds/communication, close vision, and handling/grasping/fingering of objects.
  • Ability to regularly use a keyboard and computer screen, operate a variety of office equipment, and read and create documents and reports.
