Career Development Advisor

The Creative Writing Career Advisor is responsible for providing career advising and support to students and alumni pursuing careers in the creative writing field. This includes providing guidance on job search strategies, resume and cover letter writing, and interview preparation. The advisor will also lead workshops and informational sessions on relevant career topics and collaborate with departments across the university to provide a comprehensive array of career resources.

Provide one-on-one career advising to students and alumni interested in pursuing careers in creative writing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reports directly to the Media & Communications Career Development department Team Lead manager.
  • Provide one-on-one career advising to students and alumni interested in pursuing careers in creative writing.
  • Lead workshops and informational sessions on topics relevant to the creative writing job market
  • Collaborate with other departments, organizations, and individuals to provide a comprehensive array of career resources.
  • Stay up-to-date on current industry trends and job opportunities in the creative writing field.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with alumni and employers in the creative writing field.
  • Utilize technology and online resources to assist with career exploration and job search strategies.
  • Advises students/graduates in policies and procedures of the Career Development Department services.
  • Meets with students/graduates in Career Advisory appointments.
  • Educates and assists candidate graduates with career search practices, including presentation skills, conducting research, resume review, cover letter writing, developing telephone and interviewing skills, social media presence, industry etiquette, and responsibilities.
  • Coordinates graduate resumes to appropriate employer job leads.
  • Documents all conversations (In-person and virtual appointments, telephone, email, text, and social media outreaches).
  • Maintain accurate records of student and alumni interactions and outcomes.
  • Communicates and delegates assignments to the assistant.
  • Provides accurate statistical information for the yearly accreditation.
  • Organizes and develops resources for industry research.
  • Develops outreach practices to assist graduate networking.
  • May attend industry-related seminars, conventions, and conferences.
  • Duties and assignments as assigned by Career Development Director

Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of the creative writing job market, including job search strategies and resume writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks at one time.
  • Professionally and patiently navigate through a collective decision-making process that may include several layers of permission and supervisors.
  • Move with compassion and respect while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Experience in using and managing social media.
  • Working knowledge of computers and Internet research.
  • Self-motivated, able to multitask, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience preferred in communications, creative writing, and/or journalism.
  • A basic understanding of content creation, digital marketing, branding, and communications is desirable.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred and/or related experience in the creative writing industry.
  • Prior experience in the film, TV media, print media, and/or communications industry is required, preferably in the creative writing field.

Computer/Equipment Skills:

  • Proficiency using software programs such as MS Word, PowerPoint, Keynote, Excel, Outlook, Salesforce, Zoom, and Mac OS proficiency preferred.
  • Experienced with using Social Media and SEO management preferred.

Environmental Factors/Physical Demands:

The employee must work a minimum of 40 hours per week. Physical requirements include the ability to sit for extended periods of time. Work is performed in an office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have the ability to maintain active customer and employee communication; access, input, and retrieve information from the computer system; enter alphanumeric data into a computerized system, often while listening on the telephone. May be subject to bending, reaching, kneeling, and stooping
