More Applicants, Fewer Matches: Inside Central Florida’s Recruiting Paradox
Central Florida’s job market is expanding, yet local hiring managers I have been talking with face a puzzling dilemma: application volumes are soaring, but finding qualified matches feels harder than ever.
According to FloridaCommerce payroll data analyzed by the Orlando Economic Partnership, the four-county Orlando metro added approximately 20,600 nonfarm jobs (+1.4%) between June 2025 and June 2026. During the same period, the regional labor force grew by more than 17,000 workers, yet the number of employed residents rose by only ~6,000—pushing the unemployment rate up to 4.6%.
This creates a clear paradox: more open jobs, more active job seekers, but fewer successful hires.
The narrative that "nobody wants to work" misses the point. Central Florida has a deep pool of talented individuals who want to work. Employers and candidates are simply missing each other due to systemic friction points:
- Targeted Skills Gaps: Not breaking news, but specialized fields like healthcare, technology, and skilled trades face acute talent shortages.
- Cost-of-Living Barriers: Not only in Central Florida, but soaring childcare and transportation expenses make lower-wage or long-distance commutes financially unviable for many candidates.
- Too Many Obstacles to Apply: Outdated job descriptions and automated filters often screen out capable candidates who could easily learn on the job. Some ATS systems are being sued because of this!
- The AI Resume Issue: Candidates are using AI to produce hyper-polished resumes. While this drives up interview volume, hiring managers frequently find a disconnect between resume claims and real-world soft skills.
With the Orlando Economic Partnership projecting nearly one million job openings across the region through 2031 (concentrated in healthcare, engineering, and digital fields), staying rigid is no longer an option.
To spread your wings and capture hard-to-fill talent, consider these tactical shifts:
- Leverage Customer Channels for Talent: Don't restrict your company's social media solely to product marketing. Share culture highlights and showcase hard-to-fill positions. Brand advocates and followers often make your most passionate recruits (and sponsored hiring posts yield great ROI).
- Remove Mobile Application Barriers: Passive or "job-curious" candidates abandon tedious application processes. Require minimal steps on mobile—many job seekers do not store formatted resume files on their smartphones.
- Embrace Direct-Apply Sourcing: Utilize friction-free platforms like the Florida Talent Network, which offer 100% direct-apply paths so they have a “fast path” to your application.
We will keep an eye on this all for you!
