Job Summary

Assists the Campus Safety Department staff with applying policies and procedures to ensure the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Position is an armed Campus Safety Guardian position; however, there shall be no law enforcement authority, except to the extent necessary to prevent or abate an active assailant incident (an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area) on the premises of any Lake-Sumter State College Campus or facility.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Use necessary force to prevent or abate an active assailant incident.
  • Immediately respond to and engage to stop the threat of an active assailant.
  • Conduct perimeter, exterior, and interior checks of their assigned campus to ensure premises are secure.
  • Analyze information and situations regarding activities that may be in violation of college policies and/or an indication of possible criminal activity for the purpose of determining immediate actions and/or making recommendations to ensure the safety of students, staff, faculty, and the public.
  • Collaborate with other college personnel, representatives of local agencies, etc., for the purpose of preliminary inquiries into violations of college policies and providing information and/or taking action, etc., for safety and security.
  • Communicate college policies and procedures with personnel and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of the potential consequences of violation.
  • Participate in major campus events, including but not limited to Welcome Back and Commencement.
  • Prepare a variety of documents (e.g., reports, security logs, memos, letters, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Serve as a vital front-line and strategic member of the College’s Campus Safety Department.
  • Refers observations and incidents (e.g., injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate institutional personnel and/or law enforcement for follow-up action.
  • Utilize and monitor surveillance technology.
  • Provide support in campus emergency situations and participate in all campus emergency drills.
  • Utilize current technology, as appropriate, to perform job functions and participate in training programs offered to increase technology skill level, job proficiency, current trends, and best practices relevant to the area of responsibility.
  • Work collaboratively with all areas of the college in addressing safety and security concerns, providing guidance and advice to ensure consistent enforcement of college policies and procedures relating to safety and security.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Education

  • Required:
    • Current Guardian Certification from a Florida Sheriff’s Office, as outlined in Section 30.15(1)(k).
    • Must maintain guardian certification through annual firearms requalification and mandatory training throughout employment.
    • Associate's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
    • A combination of education and experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
    • A minimum of 4 years of experience in law enforcement, military police, campus safety, or public safety.
    • Must be 21 years of ag or older.
    • Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Preferred:
    • Experience working in campus safety.
    • Knowledge of Federal law, Florida state statutes, and Administrative Code relevant to campus safety.
    • Established relationships with local law enforcement agencies.

Salary range

  • $40,000 - $45,000 per year
