A high school custodian is responsible for keeping the school's buildings, grounds, and facilities clean, safe, functional, and secure so that students, staff, and visitors can learn and work in a healthy environment contributing to the school's operational readiness and the well-being of its community
Core daily duties:
-Cleaning: Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust classrooms, hallways, offices, cafeterias, gyms, libraries, and other areas
-Restroom maintenance: Clean and disinfect toilets, urinals, sinks, and mirrors; restock soap, paper towels, and toilet paper
-Floor care: Strip, wax, buff, and shampoo hard floors; spot-clean carpets
-Waste management: Collect, separate, and dispose of trash and recyclables according to health and safety rules.
-High-touch surface sanitation: Disinfect doorknobs, light switches, handrails, and drinking fountains to reduce germ spread
-Maintenance and minor repairs
-Replace light bulbs, fix leaky faucets, unclog drains, and perform small repairs.
-Grounds and safety: Remove snow, ice, and debris from walkways; tend to immediate landscape needs.
-Clean whiteboards, tables, chairs, and other furniture.
-Report and assist with larger maintenance needs.
-Inspect playground equipment and outdoor structures for hazards.
-Lock/unlock doors, gates, and windows; activate alarms; secure the building after hours.
Event and special duties:
Set up, rearrange, and dismantle furniture and equipment for assemblies, sports, and meetings.
Assist in preparing classrooms and facilities for special events.
Respond to emergencies such as spills, vandalism cleanup, or plumbing issues. Supplies and inventory:
Monitor and restock custodial supplies and restroom essentials.
Maintain an organized inventory and request purchases as needed.
Security and reporting:
Ensure building security by locking doors, checking for unauthorized personnel, and turning off non-essential lights.
Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards to administrators.
