JOB SUMMARY

The Director, Marine Safety oversees regulatory safety compliance for the fleet to ensure conformity with applicable requirements. This role manages the Company's external audits, supports internal audits and inspections, and the continual development of safety compliance programs. The Director provides critical support to the Sr. Director, Nautical Safety & Marine Operations Strategy by maintaining the safety operations of the fleet in terms of Inspection, Audit and Compliance, as well as managing the Incident reporting system and investigation process of those incidents; as well as providing support on the Safety Management System (SMS) and acting as a technical resource for regulatory and environmental compliance.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assume responsibility for safety and NCLH's impact upon the environment, supporting fleet-wide pollution prevention and health programs.
  • Communicate and liaise with Maritime regulatory authorities, including the USCG, CLIA, classification societies, Flag States, and Port State Control.
  • Review international and port state laws and regulations pertaining to Marine Safety to ensure proactive alignment.
  • Organize and oversee schedules for (support internal) external ISM/ISPS/MLC/ISO audit programs and regulatory inspections.
  • Monitor shipboard and shore-side action logs, ensuring timely and effective corrective actions for findings issued during audits or any regulatory inspections.
  • Organize and oversee shipboard International, Federal, State, and Local certificates to ensure all vessels remain current and compliant.
  • Monitor the implementation of the Company's Safety Management System (SMS) and related maintenance procedures.
  • Review and approve company policies and procedures to ensure total compliance with applicable Maritime Safety laws.
  • Monitor Incidents, Accidents, Casualties, and hazardous occurrences; conduct investigations into incidents or hotline cases as directed by Management.
  • Provide operational support for the Company's Incident Response Plan, maintaining the notification system and Command Center readiness.
  • Review minutes from shipboard Safety Committees and Senior Management meetings to ensure proper actions and follow-ups are implemented.
  • Maintain the Muster List organization fleet-wide to reflect regulatory changes.
  • In conjunction with Technical Operations, provide safety oversight for dry/wet dock operations.
  • Support the safe and efficient operation of the managed fleet and private islands regarding safety compliance.
  • Identify and recommend new technologies and operational efficiencies that enhance safety and quality assurance.
  • Perform other job-related functions as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

DEGREE TYPE: Bachelor's Degree

FIELD(S) OF STUDY: Nautical Academy, Master License, or Marine Engineering

EXPERIENCE
  • At least 10 years of experience in cruise ship operations or an equivalent maritime field.

COMPETENCIES & SKILLS
  • Extensive knowledge of ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, and ISO quality systems.
  • Managerial experience with the ability to coordinate complex fleet activities.
  • Auditing experience supported by recognized certificates.
