Your Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Mechanical Engineering Team Lead, managing team workload, project assignments, staffing needs, and overall resource planning.
- Conduct staff performance reviews and actively support employee career development and professional growth.
- Mentor and develop junior and intermediate design staff through project work, technical guidance, training, and coaching.
- Effectively delegate work to engineering and production support staff.
- Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, staffing plans, and design approaches for projects of varying sizes and complexity.
- Work within established project budgets and schedules to help project teams achieve financial, quality, and delivery objectives.
- Serve as the mechanical engineer and technical design expert on assigned projects.
- Perform field investigations and apply advanced mechanical engineering knowledge to develop solutions to complex engineering challenges.
- Prepare and support project deliverables including basis-of-design narratives, engineering calculations, cost estimates, drawing documentation, system designs, and technical specifications.
- Lead the design and selection of HVAC and other mechanical building systems.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams, clients, building officials, contractors, manufacturers, and other project stakeholders.
- Communicate with manufacturers and contractors to resolve technical challenges and develop practical, constructible solutions.
- Perform construction site observation visits and review and respond to project submittals, RFIs, and other construction-phase documentation.
- Develop contract documents that meet applicable codes, client requirements, project standards, and Stantec quality assurance requirements.
- Identify and resolve design conflicts and technical questions while providing recommendations that improve project outcomes.
- Serve as a quality control reviewer and participate in project peer reviews.
- Support the continued growth, technical excellence, and operational performance of the mechanical engineering team.
- Travel occasionally as required, approximately 10%.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Demonstrated experience building, leading, mentoring, and managing engineering teams.
- Strong technical knowledge of HVAC and building mechanical systems, equipment, materials, means and methods, and industry standards.
- Working knowledge and application of applicable mechanical and plumbing codes, energy codes, ASHRAE standards, and other relevant building codes and standards.
- Strong understanding of all phases of project design and document production, including the relationship between drawings, specifications, calculations, and construction documents.
- Ability to review the work of others for technical accuracy, completeness, coordination, and quality.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting project budgets and schedules.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary project team environment.
- Strong analytical, creative, and critical-thinking abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong client-facing and interpersonal skills.
- Presentation and interview experience is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Revit, AutoCAD, and one or more HVAC load calculation software platforms.
- Experience with large and complex building projects required.
- Experience with mission critical, advanced manufacturing, higher education, and/or healthcare facilities is preferred.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited engineering program; ABET accreditation preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is required. Licensure in additional states is considered an asset.
- Minimum of 12-15 years of professional building mechanical engineering experience, including experience delivering large and/or technically complex projects.
- Previous experience in a technical leadership, team leadership, or engineering management role is strongly preferred.
