Job Summary and Qualifications
POSITION SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant assists the nurses and physicians in providing medical care to patients. Assists with clerical duties on an as needed basis.
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assist the technologist in scanning patients.
2. Screen patients and prepare them for the exam. This includes having them change into a gown and removing all metal
objects.
3. Assist technologist in moving patients to the MR compatible stretchers and wheelchairs. Help patient on and off the scan
table.
4. Clean the room after a patient and prepare the room for the next patient. Clean exam table and coils. Place appropriate coil
on exam table.
5. Preparing set ups for IV contrasts and IV flushes.
6. Modifying and tracking patient exams. Collate films, label and put into the reading bin.
7. Screen inpatients or family members by phone when necessary. Transport patients from the hospital when necessary.
8. Stock rooms with supplies and put away ordered supplies. Record on order book shortage of supplies for ordering. Order
supplies.
9. Stock room with linens. Change out full linen bags.
10. Become familiar with the exam protocols and develop an understanding of the MRI exam in order to assist getting protocols
from Radiology.
11. Performs other related functions as assigned.
CLERICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Prepares patient medical records.
2. Checks charts for allergies and document allergies on front of chart, medication and Encounter sheet.
3. Files paperwork in timely manner in the appropriate section of the chart.
4. Assist clerical staff in scheduling appointments.
5. Check notes in chart for clinician signature and date.
6. Performs other clerical duties as necessary.
7. Returns completed charts to front desk.
ASSESSMENT
1. Modifies interview techniques to adequately assess the adult and geriatric patient by identifying physical, psychosocial, and
education needs common to the adult and geriatric age groups.
2. Possess communication skills necessary to interpret age specific questions.
CARE OF THE PATIENT
1. Demonstrates basic knowledge of certain conditions, diseases, and treatment therapies for the specific adult and geriatric
patient.
2. Demonstrates awareness of responsibility and accountability for completion of assignments and delivery of safe, effective and
appropriate care in a timely and accurate manner.
3. Applies standards of care/practice applicable to the adult and geriatric age groups.
4. Uses vital signs normal ranges when providing routine care and assisting with emergency situations.
5. Modifies provision for patient care to reflect the response unique to the geriatric patient.
6. Assess patient for signs and symptoms of abuse and/or neglect, and follows policy on reporting.
CONTINUM OF CARE
1. Assists if needed with scheduling patients for procedures and/or appointments.
2. Participates in interdisciplinary patient care conferences.
3. Communicates and documents in an accurate and timely manner the patient's care and response to care.
PATIENT'S RIGHTS
1. Demonstrates awareness and respect to the patient, family and/or significant other as an individual and family unit.
(Identifies cultural and religious needs, language barriers, physical and psychological limitations, etc.)
2. Serves as an advocate for patients, family, and significant others in regard to decisions affecting the care provided the
patient.
3. Verbalizes the process for resolution of ethical dilemmas in the facility.
MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION
1. Insures timely and accurate communication of patient information with all members of the health care team.
2. Utilizes Meditech and the Patient Information Management System (PIMS) appropriately in accessing patient information as
well as in documenting patient care services.
3. Orients new employees to office procedures and policies.
PATIENT/FAMILY EDUCATION:
Provides patient/family education as per department and hospital policy and procedure.
1. Assists with patient/family/significant other's learning needs, abilities and readiness to learn. Identifies barriers to learning,
such as language or culture. Integrates this information into the patient's care plan.
2. Identifies and documents patient/family/SO's education needs in collaboration with other disciplines and implements an on-
going education relevant to these needs.
3. Explains tests, procedures and equipment to patient and family throughout the course of treatment.
4. Documents patient teaching on appropriate teaching tool for each teaching episode.
5. Provides teaching material as needed (pamphlets, video tapes, etc.) to enhance patient teaching.
6. Collaborates with other health care providers in developing a teaching plan for patient.
7. Ensures patient/family/SO understand discharge instructions.
What qualifications you will need:
EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:
High School Graduate or GED.
Medical training for the Medical Assistant or CNA positions.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED:
