Responsibilities
This position contributes to the day to day machining, development and fabrication of complex laboratory equipment, tools, and other equipment required by users for utilization in the performance of research projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate machine shop equipment (manual, CNC, wire EDM) to produce parts within precision tolerances following engineering drawings, sketches and verbal instruction.
- Machine and assemble instrumentation, tools, and other equipment.
- Assist with the design and fabrication of components in a laboratory setting. Work with a wide range of mechanical components.
- Problem solve and troubleshoot mechanical issues as needed.
- Contribute to machine maintenance and upkeep, as well as documentation thereof.
- Assist users in the development and timely design of instrumentation, tools, and other equipment.
- Communication with various laboratory personnel with a wide range of technical experience.
- Advances, applies and is a part of the NHMFL safety program by active participation in program development and via a proactive safety posture.
- Contributes to outreach efforts to the general public.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and three years of experience or a high school diploma or equivalent and seven years of relevant experience. (Note: post high school education or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)
- Additional experience qualifies candidates for higher-level consideration (III-VI). Each level requires three additional years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong ability to work with CAD, CAM, and CNC software as part of a complete design-to-fabrication workflow.
- Demonstrated interest in, and practical experience with, 3D printing, especially for prototyping and iterative development.
- Experience designing and fabricating fixtures and tooling that make future jobs faster, more reliable, and more repeatable.
- A collaborative mindset engaging early with researchers during the fabrication stages and making sure the probe parts are well developed.
- "Safety as a value" mindset, willingness and ability to contribute and enhance a strong safety culture.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Willingness and ability to work both in a team and independently.
